I've purchased a SATA hard disk adapter from AliExpress for the PlayStation 2 fat model, and using it with a 1TB drive successfully. The PlayStation 2 can boot from the hard drive and load programs like wLaunchElf and Open PS2 Loader (OPL), which allow me to play games from ISO files located on the hard disk. The following instructions show the order in which I've set up my system. If you don't have a memory card with FreeMcBoot, you can purchase them on AliExpress. boot FreeMcBoot (from memory card). In 2021 version 1.966 is current, which can be downloaded from Woon Yung's Website.
start wLaunchElf: go to MISC folder
run Hddmanager
format disk
install FreeHdBoot to disk
copy ELF programs to disk: Open PS2 Loader (OPL)
copy custom FreeHdBoot configuration file, see below for my file.
run wLaunchElf Hddmanager again and resize the OPL partition to 1GB
copy ART and VMC directories of OPL
run WinHiip as Administrator set hard disk type to: 48bit Hdloader
copy ISO images
I've made some changes to the default FreeHdBoot configuration file.I prefer to have the Open PS2 Loader (OPL) towards the top of the list of programs, and I've installed some other applications.See the file below for my version:

I have not tested any of the PlayStation 2 SD card adapters for the memory slot, which allow to use ISO files on a regular FAT32 file system. But these project do seem very promising. They allow you to use software on CD/DVD ISO images without a hard drive and the SATA/network adapter. They also work on various models of the slim PS2. See the following links for 2 projects: psx-place: [MX4SIO/SIO2SD] SD Card Adapter and SD-driver for the PS2 SIO2 interface a forum thread on the PSX-Place forum about original design.

Does the game being installed to the USB drive have to be an actual disc in the drive or can it be a downloaded ISO, mounted to a virtual drive in Alcohol 120 or Daemon tools? Reason I ask is Ive installed several games this way, all supposedly compatible with USB Advance, and none of them work. The screen is just black. I installed them to a Western Digital 500 GB hard drive. I even formatted the drive with USB Advance first. I have Windows Vista. Any ideas on what Im doing wrong?
You have done really a nice job. Its very helpful. Thanks. I am going to do the same with my PS2 slim tonight. Before that i would like to as you two things.1. I have a downloaded ISO of swap magic 3.8, Am i supposed to burn it using power iso or similar program or need to do something else? and what would be the title of DVD?2. i have ps2 slim Fliptop Shell, so how would i load USBadvance Cd?
1) Downloading swap magic, and then burning it can be burnt with any program. The problem I have with this is the PS2 is not going to read your downloaded disc by default, unless you have a mod chip or exploited memory card.
I am very pleased to tell you that finally i have been able to run swap magic dvd. i believe that i was not giving appropriate title to the disk. i gave it SCH-50003 and burned it with nero 7 and it worked. ?but i am unable to load usb advance. i burnt it on dvd-R. is it mendatory to burn it on a CD-R or not?. i made a simple data dvd with two files provided by you. Now what i am doing wrong. please advise.
Sorry to bother you once again. but now i am stuck in a very depressing kind of a situation. I renamed the swapmagic.elf file & copied to the swapmagic directory on the HDD Here is the strange thing. When i start up my ps2 with the swapmagic cd loaded, usb advance starts up but then usb advance tells me there is no HDD connected. How can this be running off the HDD and be telling me that there is not one connected?
THANKS, should i use a new portable usb drive or the internal hd thats in in now? if portable usb can be used should it be usb or wall AC powered? if i use the internal will all the games be lost due to reformat? i currenty have usb advance on the internal now and i loaded them from the ps2 laser when it worked. how would i load the games with the advance or should i just use extreme? Pain in the but to put hd in and out of the pc every time.once elf file is installed i can use the usb extreme or advance to load games back on the HD? should it be in a different folder or just on the drive? You do use 1 of the 2 front usb ports on the left hand side for this correct.?
We followed your procedure step by step, but when I went to load the games the HDL did not give me an option for my FAT32 drive in the Target section of the Software. It said I needed a PS2 formatted drive. SO, I re-formated the drive to PS2 through WinHiip and tried to add the BOOT folders but windows did not recognize the drive, BUT now we could load the games now through the HDL program. I am figureing we did something Stupidly wrong hehe, Is there a special software I need to add the BOOT folders and the *.elf files when the drive is a PS2 format or is there a different version of HDL I need to load the games when it is a FAT32 format?
ice. no the usb advance did not work on boot up. it goes to the memory card screen and nothing else happens. i created the 2 boot folders with the .elf files per your instuctions for usb advance. then i loaded a game with usb extreme on the fat 32 drive. i pluged in ac powered usb drive turned it on then turned on the ps2 and held the R2 button (tried both wired and wireless) on boot up and nothing but memory card screen. then i loaded the usb advance files from the usb advance bin and cue files (the ul format and ul install files) and tried that ,same thing. then in even tried the elf 4.30 files and still the same. The hd loader boot program/files did the same thing also. the hd was set on master. i tried it both ways as a usb hd from the front ps2 usb port and tried the same files with it as an internal ps2 hd and no go for both. Also tried the ps2 reset button and holding the r2 button also and no go. will the memory card hack work for boot up with no ps2 laser or is a boot disk still needed for that?yes i have the ulaunch elf cd.
Piracy is not just downloading from the internet. Its the copying and redistributing of the copy/copies in any form. Someone selling you or giving you a "copy" is piracy, since you did not have a right to posess one.
* Free MC Boot. [Official release ]. Or [Noobie Package ] * uLaunchElf. Most all versions located [HERE ] Already included with the Noobie package * HDLoader. HDL downloads [HERE ] Already included with the Noobie package * Playstation 1 Video game - Must be retail. Copies do not work * Action Replay Disc (PS2) - Non-evo and also must be retail. * TitleDB Generator - Used in creation of PS1 Exploit - Download * PS2SaveBuilder v0.8 - Download
Basically you need 1 single file on a USB stick (step 3.1 below), and to transfer this to a mem card. This exploit file is 'masked' as a game save file for the Memory Card's MC Your System Configuration save file you see on your MC. Once this file is on your MC it requires a PS1 Game to 'trigger' the exploit to run, instead of the PS1 Game by reading a special file called the TITLE.DB. So lets start with grabbing a PS1 game disc and create the TITLE.DB file.
Prepare filesTITLE.DB-- Stick the PS1 game in your PC. Open My Computer and look at the disc title, or open the disc and look for a title like "SCES_019.79", "SLES_000.00", "SCUS_000.00" etc etc. This is the game's ID - remember it.
Option 2 -- Run TitleDB Generator, click the "get ID from CD button , click "Add", then click the "Save TITLE.DB" button. The TITLE.DB file will save in the same directory TitleDB Generator is run from.
-- Drag the TITLE.DB file from the folder into the list in PS2 Save Builder. Also drag the BOOT.ELF file from uLaunchElf in to the same list. The list should look like the below image.Note upper casing and exact naming IS important. File size is not so important, these will change depending on released versions of software. 2ff7e9595c
